The digestive system is essentially a long, twisting tube that runs from the mouth to the anus.
The digestive process begins in the mouth, pass through esophagus, stomach, colon, until anus.In a living body it is contracted to 10 meters. Digestion is the process by which food broken down into their component nutrients to be availalbe for aborption and it can be used by the body.
Human body can absorb water, salt, vitamin directly into blood circulatory system. But mostly food contain carbohydrate, protein and fat which having complex molecular structure, they cannot absorb directly into blood stream. Therefore, these nutrient need go through a digestion process.
How Digestion Works?
Digestion actually begins in the mouth. Food is partly broken down by the process of chewing and by the chemical action of salivary enzymes. After the bolus is swallowed, it enters the esophagus. The esophagus moves the food to the stomach by a serious of muscular contractions called peristalsis. As the food enters the stomach, muscle contrations begin to twist, turn, churn and mixed with gastric acid until a thick paste called chyme is produced. The chyme passes through the stomach into duodenum and mix with bile and pancreatic enzymes then enter the small instestine where most of the nutrient and 80% of water will be absorbed. In the walls of the small intestine are millions villi which contain many small blood vessels. Digested food is absorbed into these blood vessels and carried to liver. After that, through some mechanism transports them to body tissues. The material that has not been absorbed moves into the large intestine, or colon. Here water and salts are absorbed, and the remaining solid waste goes out of the body through the anus.
Movement of food through the digestive system...
The food enters the esophagus and move to stomach within sixty second. Food will stay 2-4 hours in the stomach. Chyme, the mix of acid and food in the stomach, leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. In the first part of small intestine (duodonem), secretion of bile, pancreatic enzymes, and other digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestine help in the breakdown of food. Undigested food and some water enter the large intestine, excreted as solid waster after 24-72 hours. Digestion period more shorter than absorption period in the movement of food pass through the digestive system.
